CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Darren took a deep breath. He'd been watching his parents' place for days. He was shocked to see how his parents had aged. The longing and sadness inside him grew as he realized how much he missed them.

He'd put off contacting them, mostly because of his own fear or being rejected again, he had to try. It couldn't be any worse than it already was. Still, there was hope that over the years they changed their views. He wanted his family.

After spending three nights in a greenhouse that was closed for the winter, he was ready to face his parents. The cold was getting to him, and if his parents wouldn't talk to him, he needed to move on. He'd watched for friends, looked for anyone he thought he could trust, but there was no one. It seemed as if all his old friends had either moved out of town or were living in other areas. He'd seen a couple of their parents, but not wanting to give away to his family he was here, he stayed in the shadows instead of talking to them.

It was almost sunset when Darren saw his dad pull into the driveway. As he stepped out of his truck, he looked around, almost as if he could feel Darren watching him.

Darren fought a wave of nervous nausea as he watched his dad go inside the house. A moment later, he saw his mother in the kitchen window. He imagined her cooking dinner, and he wished he could just walk in the door and sit down at the table as if nothing happened.

It wasn't going to happen. He'd be lucky to even get inside the house. Still, he hoped for the best. He didn't come all this way to be negative. He had to try, had to know if there was a chance he could have a family again.

The time had come. Waiting did nothing but build his fear. Taking a deep breath, he made his way across the street and up the front porch. He'd made sure to wash, and look as good as he could, but nothing could hide the worn clothes and holes in his shoes.

The urge to turn away was strong, but he forced himself to stay. With his hand shaking, he pushed the doorbell. A small dog barked from inside, and he heard his mother yelling at it to hush. A second later, the door opened and he saw his mother up close for the first time in years.

"Mom." He didn't know what else to say.

Her eyes went wide, and she sucked in a hard breath. "Darren?"

He nodded. "Hi, Mom."

She glanced over her shoulder nervously, then back to him. "You shouldn't be here." Tears filled her eyes. "Are you okay?"

He nodded. "I just wanted to see you again." He wanted to reach out and pull her into a hug, but he stayed frozen where he was. "I miss you."

She choked back a sob.

"Who is it?" His father called from inside.

Darren
